EOTC WEEK

Hello, today I will be writing about our EOTC week. I will be writing about my reflection about EOTC week because our teacher has told us to.

To start of with EOTC is short for "Education Outside The Classroom." EOTC is activities out of school. It's trips. EOTC is basically trips but trips from school.

We had 3 days of EOTC, those 3 days are really fun days. In our first day we went to Adrenalin Forest with another Kahui which is Tieke. In our second day we went to Jellie Park but sadly I wasn't there on that trip. In our last day of EOTC, we took a look around places in the city with Riroriro.

Adrenalin Forest:

Adrenalin Forest took a lot of courage in me because I had to went out of my comfort zone. What Adrenalin Forest challenged me the most was the zip-line / flying fox. The flying fox challenged me the most because I felt like I was gonna fall even though I was attacked to the rope. It challenged me the most because I have never been to a type of flying fox like that.

What frightened me the most was the obstacles that had one piece of rope on top and the bottom, I had to walk on that while going fast. It frightened me because it can be really wobbly, and it makes feel like im in danger.

I mainly loved doing the attaching and unattach myself on the ropes. The sound of the hooks is very satisfying. I also loved the flying fox even though that was one thing that challenged me the most but its really fun after a few tries.

I learnt that it can be hard to get out of your comfort zone but if you have fun and try your best to take a step out of your comfort zone you'll really feel like you've achieved something good. I also learnt how Adrealin Forest works and how hard it can be.

Next time I hope I can get up to level 3 at least or higher. I would also love to see how it feels like being at the very top.

Jellie Park:

Jellie Park was our second trip but I sadly couldn't come because it was my dad's birthday and i wasn't quite feeling well, at the same time I didn't want to go swimming. I was really excited to come but I couldn't. If there was a next time I would take my chance to come and not miss it but it was also fun at my dad's birthday.

I hope next time I'll be able to experience Jellie Park with my school mates.

Big Day Out In The City:

In the city we visted many places like the, museum, the Christchurch Library, and Margaret Mahy.

We went to the garden first but we rushed so we couldn't really see many things from the garden.

When we arrived at the museum I felt happy and excited because I was interested in seeing old things with value. I also felt nervous at the same time because I was scared I would break anything or make a mess. The museum was full of surprises. There were a lot of things to play with and to be interested in.

In Turanga I was more interested because I have only been there once and I was interested in their language books. I also wanted to get books but we weren't allowed. The thing that challenged me in Turanga was being quiet and being gentle because I'm not really that quiet and gentle.

Margaret Mahy was full of other schools too. There were a lot of little kids. I was frightened I would run into a small kid and hurt them but over all it was fine, everything was all goods. It was really sunny though.

I mainly loved the view of Turanga because the building was gigantic, beautiful, high. I learnt a lot about other extinct birds like the Moa. I would like to see more of the museum next time.

Over all everything was fun but really tiring at the end of the day. I am very thankful for HHS for giving us 3 days of EOTC. That is all, bye.

How Does The Water Cycle Work? Explanation Writing

Here is a piece of explanation writing I did in my own topic. Please give advice and some feed backs for next time.

How Does The Water Cycle Work?

Have you ever wondered where water comes from? Have you ever thought where water disappears? Water is an essential part of life. Earth has a limited amount of water, however, it is continually recycled in a process called “the water cycle.” Here is how the water cycle works in a shorter way.

To begin with, there is something called precipitation. Precipitation is rain, hail, snow or sleet. Any kind of weather conditions where something is falling from the sky is precipitation. Precipitation occurs when lots of water has formed that the air cannot hold it any longer. The clouds get heavier and as a result water falls back to Earth in the form of rain, snow, sleet or hail.

Secondly, when water falls back to Earth as rain, snow, hail or sleet, it can fall back in the oceans, rivers, lakes or it might end up on land / ground. When it ends up on land / ground, it soaks into the Earth and enters the soil. The soil will absorb the water then it will be stored as groundwater. Groundwater is water that is held underground in the soil or in pores. This process is “Infiltration.”

Thirdly, I think we all know what evaporation is! Evaporation is when the sun heats up water in rivers, lakes, or oceans and turns it into vapour or steam . The vapour will then leave the river, lake, or ocean. It will then appear into the air quickly, not that real quick.

Lastly, the water vapour cools. The vapour will then be changed into liquid water. This leads to tiny water droplets being formed, then it leads into clouds forming but it takes a lot of tiny water droplets to form a cloud. However the clouds are unable to hold the water. This stage is called “Condensation.”

As we can see that the water cycle takes quite a long time. We also can see how many more steps there are in the water cycle. Let’s appreciate water while we have it.

Egg Drop Challenge / Science

Hello there, today we had an egg drop experiment / challenge at science. I will be talking about it today.

Yesterday at science we were working on how to protect our egg and like making a structure. We had to only use Popsicle sticks, bamboo skewers, little foam pieces, tape, rubber bands, one piece of string and a medium sized piece of a garbage bag for our parachute.

We had our structure look like a pyramid, just a bit. It was a triangle shape. We used foam squares at the bottom of each corner of our structure. We added popsicle sticks at the bottom of our triangle to make it like a 3D triangle. We were a group of 6 so we had each two people focus on one thing.

I think the best part of the structure was our little box for our egg covered in paper towels and a black garbage bag.

We made a box using foam squares and then we covered the egg up with a black garbage bag and paper towels. Then we added rubber bands to make the black garbage bag and the paper towels to make it stay covering the egg.

When we had one of our teammates drop the egg it sadly landed on top instead of landing on the bottom. It sadly did not survive. The crack was near the top left of the egg.

If we will do this next time, I would definitely add a parachute and make a paper box that fits the egg and then stick some foam squares on the sides of the box.

Thats all we did.

Mars Rover 2020 | Explanation Writing

 Mars Rover 2020

Have you ever wondered if Mars had a rover? Well now you’ll know all about Mars Rover 2020.

NASA made another mission to Mars and that is transporting a rover to Mars by the time of February 2021. On July 30 2020 the journey to Mars had already started.

What is a rover? A rover is a working device, well basically its a vehicle that keeps roaming around in one particular space. A rover can be bigger than a car or the size of a car. A rover is mainly designed for planets like Mars.

NASA built the rover because they wanted to see some evidence of the past ancient life on mars and other things like aliens. They would also like to find soil and rocks.

The rover also has a partner that is like a drone. They have called it the “Mars Helicopter”. Its purpose is to help the rover show directions and also show which place is better to explore on Mars.

As you can see NASA’s next mission to Mars is quite a big mission. The paragraphs tell you a lot about the Mars rover and the mission.

Freeze Frames

Hi this week and last Friday we have been learning about freeze frames.

We have been doing some freeze frames about bullying. We have also learnt the 4 important things to do when doing a freeze. Here are the 4 things we learnt when doing freeze frames: 1) Levels  2) Expressions
3) Spatial Relationships  4) Gestures.  I will just be explaining the photo:

In this freeze frame there were 3 bullies planing something to do with the victim. As you can see we were using spatial relationship. The bullies were using some gestures too. There was some expressions on our faces. The bullies had happy face. There were also levels, what I mean by level is height difference.

Thats all bye.

Business & Enterprise Kete

For the past 3 weeks we have been involved in the Business & Enterprise Kete. The Business and Enterprise Kete is where students form a group and try to make and build a business at school.

My role on the group was Sales / Finance Manager, and this is what I did when the whole event started. I had to help the Marketing Manager sell the products, and I also had to make sure that the money the people pay us was the right amount.

My company was named / called "The Iced Shop" because we were selling two drinks that were iced.

The product we were selling was Iced Coffee and Iced Tea. We decided to sell those drinks because we knew it could of been hot or sunny that day. Also because our other drinks we were supposed to sell did not work out.

My reflection on how the business went overall is quite fine but I had a lot of weakness rather than strength. My main weakness was that no one was gonna buy because no one really liked coffee or tea. My main strength was that I knew somehow we will sell more than at least 5 drinks because people would probably need something to drink after eating but overall I guess we all have our weaknesses.

My reflection on the overall Business and Enterprise is pretty good, it also made me experience how what business is all about even thought its not real it at least made me learn more about having a business. Not being able to sell any drinks was all our weaknesses in my company but having teamwork is our strength.

I can't find any photos of our company or photos of us.

My Hurumanu 1 Learning Story | Hurumanu 1

Hello, so today our teacher had told us to post one of our learning stories in our blogs. I picked my hurumanu 1 learning story, which is reading. So hope you like it?

A learning story for me is where you just put in what you have learned, what you did, your favourite part of that subject. It's just basically just writing data or something else, its like your own record of that subject.

Here is my hurumanu 1 learning story:

Emotional Awareness

Hi there, in the last two weeks our class have looked at Resilience, Understanding emotions, and Impulses, and I have come to realise that these things are important, and being to understand these things is important because if we aren't able to understand these things we can probably have a bad outcome.

I think being able to control my emotions in different problems or situations avoids drama or serious things or anything else that can cause a fight or anger. Sometimes it can really be hard to be able to control your emotions.

Knowing how to react and respond in situations rather than acting on impulses means that I can have control of my reaction and on how I respond, and being able to understand, I can also think before doing that action that might effect something, rather than not thinking before doing that action.

The effect that these things have on my Social Wellbeing can help me more or can just cause some problems, but if I try to control myself then I can have a good outcome.

Thats all I have to say, bye.

Growth Mindset / Own Personal Mindset

Growth Mindset / Own Personal Mindset

Hello there, in this blog I will be answering some questions and I will be talking about what "Growth Mindset" is and more, I hope you'll like this blog. So lets go!

What Growth Mindset Means To Me:
To me a growth mindset means something you believe in and that you can achieve it by hard work, that's not the only thing it can mean to me, there is also more things that it can mean to me like things can be developed like talents and things, it kinda also means to me having more of like a positive, mature attitude or brain.

Reflect About How You React To Tackling Something Challenging:
Honestly, for me it really depends on what the situation is, there would probably be only three things I would do if I face a challenge in my life, I would just try to fix or solve it and try not to give up on it, I would also try to be positive no matter how negative it can be.

An Example Of When You Have Experienced Fixed Mind Set, What Were The Outcomes From That Situation?:
The day I have experienced a fixed mind set was when I chosen to be the main sing leader for a competition we had but I declined it because I didn't want to get embarrassed and I didn't want to a face a type of challenge like that, the outcomes from that situation was that my friend got picked and I wasn't allowed to sing because there was already enough people to sing and I regretted my decision.

What Strategies Could You Put Into Place To Help Move Towards A More Growth Mindset Rather than Fixed Mindset:
For me I would say try to be more positive and try to face more challenges or try not to avoid anything I like to do when it comes to showing it to the public.

That is it for today, I really hoped this helped you guys.
What do you guys thinks is better, having a growth mindset or a fixed mindset?
Bye...

Food Tech / Chocolate Chip Cookies

Hi everybody, on Wednesday and on Thursday we made chocolate chip cookies! Here is how we made them:

On Wednesday we first made the base of the cookie which is the dough, then we bake the cookies.
How we made the dough, we had to mix flour, white sugar, chocolate chips, butter, baking powder, vanilla essences.

On Thursday, we had to cut the dough in half equally, then we moulded it into circles equally, we used 2 tray's to put the cookies in. On the first tray we had to make 16 cookie shape and 8 on the other tray! After that we gave the cookies a flat shape by using a fork.

Then we put them in the oven and the oven was at fan bake and 180C, we had to leave them for about 9 minutes or maybe more then that, it depends if the cookies edges are golden.

For me the cookies tasted crumbly and sweet but yummy, I didn't really like the texture because it was crumbly I usually don't like those cookies, but overall it tastes good.

Here is the recipe we used:

ingredients:
  • 1/4 c sugar (50g)
  • 100g margarine or butter
  • 2T condensed milk
  • 1T Baking powder
  • 1c Flour
  • 1t Vanilla Essence
  • 1/4c of inclusions

Method:
  1. Preheat oven to fan bake (350 Degrees/180C).
  2. Cream the butter (room temperature) and sugar together in a large bowl.
  3.  add the condensed milk to the creamed mixture and mix with a wooden spoon then add the Vanilla Essence.
  4. Sift the flour and the baking powder together and Add to the mixture.
  5. when adding the inclusions, push the ingredients together slowly, not stirring.
  6. Use a teaspoon to scoop out the dough (25g - 30g)
  7. Roll them all into even circle shapes using the palms of your hands.
  8. Place on a baking tray. press down with a fork or palm of your hand flatten the dough slightly.
  9. Bake (180 degrees)  for 8 to 9 minutes( depending on if the edges are a brownish colour).
  10. EAT
Bye

Benny / Drama !

What is Picture Dictation ?
Picture dictation is like a picture really, here is an example: a teacher could be describing a picture or a scene, and the students have to draw, there are more many examples to find out what Picture Dictation is, the aim of picture dictation is to listen close, the drawing should be quick. Here is another example of Picture Dictation: Maybe you are reading a story and you have to draw one of the scene in the story, this drawing of the scene can include a word.

Our teacher told us to do picture dictation about the story we read called "Benny!" We had to fold our piece of paper into thirds and it gives us 6 spaces in our paper, and whatever scene it is first we have to draw it in the first box we had in our paper!

What is Role on the Wall?
Role on the wall is an outline of a body that is drawn into a sheet of paper, then students or you, have to write inside the drawing or the outside of the drawing with words or phrases about you or about a  character you have in mind. (Here is a picture of what it can be)

What is an Iceberg
You might be thinking the iceberg in real life but in drama it is an outline of an iceberg, on top of the iceberg you or have to write what people think about you or what the other characters think about that main character. I think you get what I mean right?

What is Hot Seating?
Hot Seating is where you ask people open questions not closed questions. Its interviewing a character or like just asking them open questions. Here is an example of an open question: Why did you choose that answer?

We had an activity in drama, we had to form a doughnut shape, then the people who were inside the doughnut had to ask the people that were in the outside of the doughnut open questions.

Other Task:

(Write 5 questions you would like to ask Benny, I or the Mum)

Here are my 5 questions, me and my buddies made this:

1. How did you feel when Benny walked out?
2. How did you feel when Benny pushed in the water?
3. Why do you think Benny said "I'm not stupid!?"
4. What happened next after Benny left?

Here is a video were we had to act and ask questions to one main character! I was grouped with Liyah, Artee, Zoe!

( This link is the video, I could not show it here because it's not letting me add it to my blog! )

Writing In Role:

Dear Benny, I am so sorry about what happened at the beach a week ago, I just couldn't resist just ignoring you after you walked out on me, are you mad at me? I am sorry, but I don't know why you said "I'm not stupid!" These words you said had been bugging me ever since, I hope you can forgive me.

Sincerely I.

The Lack Of Pigeons | Hurumanu 2

Hi everybody, so Hurumanu 2 is drama and reading, today we are doing reading, we have to pick a story and do tasks and questions about that story! I picked a story called "The Lack Of Pigeons"! I hope you enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Questions:

Why did Meredith tell people she had an audition?
She told the people she had an audition because she thinks maybe they knew about it and she wanted them to go see it or watch it!

How did Meredith's Mum react to news of the audition?
I think her Mum was quite excited and happy or proud of her because maybe she was doing an audition!

What is the author trying to tell us in this story?
I think the author is trying to tell us about a girl called Meredith noticing quite some things that are different!

What do you think happens at an audition?
I think what happens on an audition is where people show some of their talents or like other things like cooking or singing, it depends on what programme the company or the show is doing like for example, the main programme was about singing!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prediction...

Predict what would happen if there really was an audition..
My prediction would probably be this: Meredith would actually be able to get seen by people and her Mum would be super proud at her, maybe she would be really happy and maybe had won the audition

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DLO

Here is an DLO task I have to do if I finish doing the other activities that are part of the story!

Write a letter to the author:

Dear Paul Mason the author, I would just like to ask you question about the story "Bok Choy" you made, but first I want to say your story is quite interesting though, the start hooked me and stuff. Here are my questions. 1. Why is the main character's name Meredith? Is it because you like that name? 2. What was the purpose of the story? 3. Are you proud of what you have made?, I hope you can reply back to this! That's all I have to say, BYE!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, that's all for Hurumanu 2!

Staying Afloat | Hurumanu 2 / Reading

Hello there,
Today I have another reading task for Hurumanu 2, this time we have more tasks for this story called Staying Afloat, we have 3 coloured groups and whatever coloured group we were in we had to read one story that we had to in our coloured group!

Questions:
What is a Kupenga? A Kupenga is a thing for catching or trapping something like a fish or a butterfly!

Why did Vika's face go scarlet? Vika's face went scarlet because of Kele, Kele was grinning, and maybe because he had caught the fish. Also because she was trying to pull her rod furiously!

Describe Vika's Personality:
  • Vika has a type of personality when they want to show off, just a little bit, she gets embarrassed to easily, she is also funny and mean, and nice too.
Describe Kele's Personality:

  • Kele's personality has a type of personality that includes being greedy when it comes to trying to show off, but he is nice, he has a type pf this humour, just a bit!
How did Kele feel about Grandad's old fishing stories? Kele felt a little bit worried or scared in my opinion, he was also shocked when he heard Grandad's story!

Other Task: Predict What Would Happen If Kele Wasn't Wearing His Life Jacket...

If Kele had not wore his life jacket, Kele might of drowned when he fell into the water, and drink a lot of salty water, he would of probably tried to swim.

DLO:

For the our DLO we just have to do one of the DLO task that our teacher have written for us to pick, the one I picked was : Record Yourself reading your favourite part of the story!

Take a look:

That's all for this task,
BYE!

Olly's New Bike | Hurumanu 2 / Reading

Hi,
we were told to do a blog spot everytime we had a reading task and answer questions, the story I picked is called : Olly's New Bike.

Olly's New Bike is about a boy called Olly wanting a new bike from the bike store but his mom got a bike that was dirty and was not new, and it was from the garage sale, his parents were divorced and he didn't have friends until this grown up called Mohamed came and greeted them when he saw Olly crying, he finally got a new friend when Mohamed introduced his family.

Tasks:

Questions:

How did Olly feel when he got his new bike? I think Olly felt super mad and sad, also furious, I also think he felt like he can’t get anything good.

Why did Olly feel like this?

Maybe because he couldn’t get the bike he wanted.

Describe Olly's peronality:

Olly has a different personality when it comes to the things he wants or likes, it’s like he can’t control himself, he is not that grateful for what he has. He can be nice too.

Extra Description:

Olly has dark, short brown hair that glows in the sun, his back hair stands up like a mountain, he has a type of skin colour that is light and a bit tan at the same time.

Predict If Mohamed Hadn't Move In Next Door:

I think that Olly would stay the same and wouldn’t have any friends that’s next to him, he also probably wouldn’t be able to help Mohamed’s son with his english. Maybe Olly would not be happy a lot of times if they were not there.

Hornby High's Athletics Day

CARR VALUES:
Commitment, Achievement, Resilience, Respect

Yesterday was Hornby High's Athletics Day.
I participated in long jump, discus, shot put and sprints. I picked social instead of competitive because I was not brave enough.

CARR Values were clearly demonstrated by the other student in the school by having a go, being brave, and showing respect to the adults.

I demonstrated the CARR Values by showing respect to other people, trying to achieve to throw the discus further, giving every sports a go, and being brave.

I was really, really proud of sprints because I came first and giving each sports a try even though I don't like some of the sports.

Next year I will definitely join athletics day and I think I might try competitive!
