Hello this week, we read about a legendary character called Kupe who found his fishing lines were empty because his hooks and nets were covered in a thick slime, the kind of slime that would have probably been made by an octopus.
Main characters in the story are Kupe, his wife Hine-Te-Aparangi and Muturangi the owner of Te Wheke, the giant octopus.
Kupe said he would kill Muturangi’s pet, Te Wheke. After that, the following things happened, Kupe went home and told his wife what happened and they decided to take the big waka to hunt down the octopus and bring some warriors to help them. When they sailed far out to sea they tried to bait Te Wheke the octopus to come closer. Then the octopus got a hold of the waka and the waka started tipping everyone into th
e water. For weeks they have chased Te Wheke.
In the end, two major things happened. Hine-Te-Aparangi saw something unusual. It was Aotearoa AND Te Wheke was escaping, but then he was clubbed with Kupe’s mere and died.
